aside from regualar change oil, change spark plugs.. etc..
what struck me most is that when the mechanic used a timing light..
    uhmm..
    Is it really effective?
Does it really tunes your car engine?

    thanx

parang...kasi speaking from experience, pag di ako nagpapaganito parang may vibration yung oto ko from the engine bay while running eh. compared to, if ginawa ito, medyo nag hu-humm lang ang tunog ng makita.

pero dunno how the process works though...

It works like this (sort of, please correct me if I'm wrong)

There are marks on your engine that tells you exactly what position the crankshaft is in (timing marks). The timing light is connected to the #1 sparkplug, to make it light up every time cylinder #1 fires. When your engine is turning, and the timing light connected, you light up the timing marks with the timing light. This light will light up at the mark where the timing is set.

Say it's set at 5 degrees advanced (before the piston #1 reaches top position). When your cylinder #1 fires, the timing mark reads on the 5 degrees advanced mark, and the timing light lights up. It does this every other revolution (because there's a spark every other revolution).

Meaning, say 1000RPM ang andar ng engine mo, sisindi ang timing light 500 times per minute at the 5 degree mark. The effect: may nakikita kang "static" image of the timing marks (due to the strobe effect introduced by the timing light) which allows you to get a reading.

Yup. The timing light does not tune the engine. The mechanic will still be the one to make the adjustments. But it is a useful tool for a mechanic who knows how to use it.

Yes, it is effective as it defines exactly when the sparks will ignite, as described by Alpha One.

In my experience, I would place it at 10deg advance,- as the engine feels nimble (also no overheat), and is a 'petrol-saver',- vs. delayed timing.
