Hi...which is a better choice between the all new 2012 Ford explorer and the Toyota Prado gasoline? Ford at about 2.4M vs the Prado at about 2.7M...since both are gasoline I really cant seem to choose.

If you are going to use it on-road for the next 7-10 years, you'd do well in the Explorer and all its comfort and convenience features. All wheel drive is a good bonus for when you visit the beach or have to tow a trailer up a wet boat ramp. The platform is very new and it is made to pass newer and more stringent safety standards that are still not mandatory in other markets yet. As a family hauler, the Explorer is great.

The Prado may seem dressed in a suit, but it still a thickly built truck underneath all that fluff. Great if you need the truck part of the Prado, but if you don't (like most SUV buyers), you will still have to live with sacrifices that come with it like decreased cabin space (because all the components are tucked higher up and intrude on the space), truck like ride (though I hardly notice that anymore on my 80 series), heavier weight, so-so handling (you won't mistake it for anything but a truck).

The Land Cruiser Prado is also a part of the Land Cruiser family and can be serviced by Land Cruiser specialist shops when it gets a bit older. There are also Land Cruiser specialist parts stores that are stocked with Land Cruiser parts from the oldest model up to the newest one. And being a Toyota, it also shares some small parts (e.g. switchgear, minor cabin trim) with more pedestrian Toyota models so you don't have to pay luxury SUV prices for those.

If you need the car also for harabas purposes then you'd better get the Prado as the off road capability is excellent. And then if all you're hauling is just your family with their stuff for a trip to the mall or somewhere out of town, get the Explorer. Its more refined and has more power (290hp vs 275hp for the Prado).

Suv will be mainly for city driving...for family use. Important to me are features and functionality...also are they both the same in terms of gasoline consumption?

I see, kung ganon eh di Explorer na nga. But for city driving, both would not be yielding good gas consumption figures. The Explorer should have the upper hand in this aspect though. It has the better technology and its engine size is 500cc smaller which should give better FC. However, if you're after an SUV in this class that gives good gas mileage, your only choices would be the Pajero DID, Veracruz and Mohave, all of which are more expensive.

I was really bent on getting the Prado gasoline...Ive actually been on the reserved list since May but until now still no stocks. Was really only eying the Prado and with the strong demand made me even convinced that its the right choice...it being very sought after. Didn't have the Explorer on my mind till I saw it featured on a tv show recently which caught my eye....now Im a bit confused on which one is the right choice...

The Explorer should do better in the fuel economy department. It's fuel economy rating in the US is good for its class.

You can consider the Explorer. The Prado is too much truck for your intended use. You'll benefit more from the Explorer's more car-like architecture (monocoque body, independent suspension all around, etc.). Even has more cup holders, up to date child seat attachment points, and the cargo is area is more spacious with the seats up.

I dont consider the new Explorer after I have seen it in the flesh. I think Ford downgraded its SUV quality: no hydraulic engine hood, no side step board, very low ground clearance, no power tilt & telescopic steering, the body is too wide for local street and parking area...
