Both the Mazda 2 1.5R and the City 1.5E consume about 9 km/L in moderate to heavy city driving.

Noted sir, but in terms of maintenance cost, interior space and re-sale value which one is much better?
No idea about maintenance cost, since I don't own either.
The City will definitely have the advantage when it comes to interior space and resale value. The Mazda 2's main advantage is in its handling and driving dynamics. It's something you can't really quantify on paper, and is best appreciated with a test drive. In addition, I think the Mazda 2 1.5R hatch looks much better than the City 1.5E, especially with the latter's unbelievably tacky chrome grille.
Of course, if you're a sedate city-dweller who could care less about how a car handles at speed through corners, then baliwala sayo yung handling ng Mazda 2.
Thank you sir jut703 for the information, yeah, I would'nt care much on the handling or the fun aspect of driving cause for sure I will drive my car on and off from work, so for me it's just getting me from point to point, however I've seen Altis 1.6 A/T 2009 in the same price range as CityE 2009, would you recommend it? as far as I can see my only problem with this is the FC? is it correct sir?
Now I'm comparing a subcompact car (CityE) with a compact car (Altis 1.6 A/T), I think in all aspect the difference would be minimal but which would you sirs prefer and why? .... or my assumptions are wrong![]()
The Altis is actually a rather fuel efficient compact, kahit 4AT lang 'to. Hindi nagkakalayo ang fuel efficiency ng City 1.5E and Altis 1.6 G AT.
The advantage of the Altis? You get slightly better interior room, a more comfortable ride, better seats, and well, it's a compact (not a subcompact) so mas may "dating" 'to - for me at least.
Oh yeah, even if the City says that it has 120 hp and the Altis only has 109, the Altis feels more powerful in city driving because it's tuned to have better low-end grunt, unlike the City which needs to be revved high to feel the power surge.
For me sir I do not need power to drive so fast, I need it for up hill driving... So, for city driving from Cainta or Makati to Mandaluyong would you prefer Altis than City sir?
And what would be the edge of City in comparison with Altis sir?
Etong dalawa nalang ba ang pinipilian bro? At matic lang ba? Ayaw mo ng FD 1.8 M/T? FC shouldn't be too bad, lots of power on tap too which would make it more efficient in climbing.
I can vouch that this is true. With comparison of a 2008 Altis 1.6V and 2011 City 1.5E. They both achieve about 7.5km/l city driving yet the Altis feels more comfortable strolling around with its 4 speed matic than the 5 speeder in the City, which feels a bit more busy. Downshifting more often due to its close gearing and low torque.
My Vios on the other hand consumes
on light traffic
on moderate traffic
8-9km/l on heavy traffic, all on ECO driving.
HTH. Goodluck!
Sir GTi, actually I have three cars in mind, City E, Altis 1.6V and Avanza G, I need an automatic car due to heavy traffic in Cainta, FD sir eh baka mahal pa ang maintenance cost and talagang I would prefer A/T sir.
* Sir basti08, good point on the 4 speed vs 5 speed, kaya for me talagang Altis has a big advantage over all compared to City E, but when it comes to maintenance cost how is Altis against to City and Avanza G?
Hahaha that is why I'm also interested in Avanza but don't have any idea sa FC nya hesitant ako, one more thing sir, since the car can fit 7 people eh baka maging driver lang ako ng mga lakad or out of town trips kaya parang gusto ko mag settle sa compact or subcompact car lang po.
Pero still ang options ko po eh:
Honda City E
Toyota Altis 1.6 A/T
Toyota Avanza G
Still can't decide sirs.
Nakasakay na ko sa City and Altis and eto lang masasabi ko:
- Mas masarap sumakay at mag drive sa Altis
- sa maintenance naman parehas lang yan halos, konti lang difference kaya go for the Altis na![]()
My opinion:
City E for 5PAX max (not often)
-Mas tipid sa gas, sporty compared to the altis, newer with more toys like paddle shifters
Altis 1.6 AT if seating 5 happens more often
-Bigger car feel, probably drives better as gecko guy said,
your choice I guess - can't really go wrong with either

Thank you for the information Sir Gecko Guy and Sir mda, most often than not, every weekdays it will only be me and 1 passenger so para po sa akin ok na yung City however kung almost same price lang din naman and same year model (2009) ang makukuha kong Altis then I would go for Altis, mas mataas pa ang re-sale value kasi after 5 years I'll sell it to buy a new car, probably an SUV po.
If I'm lucky enough by October this year eh baka po pumasok pa yung budget ko (550K) for 2010 model for a City E, now that's another scenario, if City 2010 compared to Altis 2009, which one should I choose sirs???
Toyota engines are known for their low end torque which is why the Altis would have similar fuel consumption with the City despite the inferior 4 speed box. The difference would be more clearly seen in highway driving. But still... 7.5km/L is not a good figure to see in small 1.5 or 1.6L engines...Parang pang 1.8L na eh. This is the price you have to pay if you get a matic.
Kung Altis tinitingnan ko, I would get only the post facelift version which has an improved 122hp dual VVTi engine. This should get somewhat better mileage, and better performance too.
Both cars have good resale value. But do you know what would most likely retain even more of its resale value? An Isuzu Crosswind. There is also a matic version for this one, and you save lots in terms of fuel consumption it being a diesel, and also very low maintenance costs. If you plan to sell it soon, get this one, install a K&N filter and maybe also alcohol injection to somewhat ease the kupad.
This has even better resale value than an Innova!
Kidding aside, I suggest you get the City. You get top of the line equipment, and the engine will give you more smiles in the highway. Besides, if fuel consumption is pretty similar, why not get the newer and faster car?

I'll go for the Altis
Can't swallow 7.5km/l for a subcompact.
I think the City E is a top line subcompact but it doesn't offer more equipment than an Altis G AT.
In fact, an Altis G AT also has trip computer as the City but edges it in auto climate control, 60/40 split seats, thicker 195/65R15 tires, it losses a passenger airbag though. If you can, a 1.6V AT adds a pair of tweeters, optitron gauges, a passenger airbag, rear solid discs, rear sunshade handsome side skirts with 16" mags and even thicker tires (205/55R16).
Goodluck.
* Sir GTI, Crosswind is one of my dream car but with a budget of 550k I would only get a 2005 or perhaps 2006 model which is pretty far fetch from the 2009 City or Altis, that is why I'll settle for City or Altis for now however if there are any A/T compact or subcompact which has better FC I would really consider it.
* Sir Basti08, that made me think, if Altis G AT has no passenger airbag then I would consider City instead unless I could get a 1.6V 2009 for 550k sir. - safety first as always-
Sirs meron po ba kayong alam na compact or subcompact car na mas mataas sa 7.5km/l ang FC with 1.5 A/T variant, though I know this topic is really subjective pero sa mga marami na pong nahawakang tsikot, meron po kayang atleast on a normal basis eh 9-10km/li ang FC?
Vios 1.5 AT ko ganyan consumption. 9-10km/l, medyo mabigat pa paa ko.
nung one time nag ECO driving ako on light traffic
17.6km/l note: dumaan to ng EDSA. I live in project4, I work in Banawe/Caloocan. my route is aurora blvd, new york, edsa, kaingin then c3.
12.7km/l on moderate traffic ECO driving. pauwi ako, route: Caloocan c3-mauban-gasan-pitimini-baler-examiner-q.ave-circle-kalayaan-kamias-anonas.
kaso ayaw mo ng Vios for sure kasi 'taxi' ;) hehehehe
